Tongues and Grooves

Starting with a special concert to mark the opening of The Havant Literary Festival with winning poems from the literary festivals Poetry Competition. The evening will feature nationally and internationally acclaimed writers and poets such as Rory Motion, Donald Gardner and Nick Evans among others

International poet and translator.
Performances worldwide, including the legendary reading at East Village Theatre, New York in 1967. His one-man performance, ‘Chicken with Madness’, was one of three poetry performances selected for Amsterdam’s year as cultural Capital of Europe. ‘One of the most exciting and surprising poets around’.

Nick Evans
Multi musician and nationally acclaimed pedal steel guitarist.

Guest appearances: John Haynes, winner of The Costa Award for Poetry, 2006; Bloodaxe Poet, Stephanie Norgate; Maggie Sawkins and Bernard Macdonagh, reading from ‘The Zig Zag Woman’.

Pauline has written three crime novels featuring Detective Inspector Andy Horton, Tide of Death, Deadly Waters and the newly-published The Suffocating Sea in addition to two thrillers, In Cold Daylight, which was short-listed for the World Book Day Prize 2008, and In For The Kill. Pauline will be reading from her novels and taking questions. She will also be available to sign copies of her books.

Brian Clarke’s work as a journalist with The Times has taken him to some of the most remote and beautiful places on earth, where he has witnessed the natural world under pressure. His environmental novel The Stream won the international Natural World Book Prize. Brian will use The Stream as a backdrop to discuss threats to the environment - and how writers can “get inside nature” to draw attention to them.

An exploration of the life, work and local connections of the enduringly popular comic writer and one-time Emsworth resident, PG Wodehouse. The art of this unique talent - Evelyn Waugh called him the best writer of the first half of the 20th century - will be illustrated with quotations from some his books, plays and song lyrics. This talk is by Tony Ring, the foremost UK authority on all things Wodehouse.
